Prestigious hospital installs Mineral Insulated Cable

A major hospital has used Mineral Insulated Cable (MIC) from AEI Cables to ensure security of power and the system loop wiring to its new state-of-the-art fire alarm system.

The MIC was installed in the sophisticated system at, St James's University Hospital, Leeds, to bring together 26 alarm panels, providing central monitoring across the site.

It also provides information on separate devices through a site wide graphics display complete with engineering management tool.

The MIC is an enhanced cable which will ensure continuity of power even in a fire because it will not burn and can withstand temperatures of more than 1,000°C, enabling maximum time for escape in the event of fire.

Jim Duffy, Chief Executive of AEI Cables, said: “This was an important choice in that Mineral Insulated Cable guarantees continuity of supply so important in these kind of environments.”

Design and specification was by the Leeds office of Atkins Ltd and main contractor for the project was Richardson Electrical, Leeds.
