2-Jul-07 ![]() Civic Centre seeks enhanced solution An award-winning civic building in Sunderland will use cabling from UK leader AEI Cables for its new fire alarm system. More than 7,500 metres of 1.5v two-core enhanced cabling will be installed in Sunderland Civic Centre - with work expected to be completed shortly. Sunderland City Council specified an enhanced cable solution. This product is appropriate where risk assessments have been completed and all involved parties agree that a softskin cable with a lower survival capability than a mineral insulated product can be installed in that specific application. AEI Cables’ Firetec Enhanced is pliable and easy to install and is ideal for demanding or complex situations meeting all the requirements of BS5839. Sunderland Civic Centre was completed in 1971 and was designed as a series of hexagonal courtyards, sitting in a hilly landscape. The building received a Civic Trust Award and a RIBA Award in 1972 and was acclaimed at the time as a new idea of what a Civic Centre and local government should be. The city (pictured) is known for the way it has re-invented itself since it achieved city status in 1992. Derek Mansfield, managing director, AEI Cables said: ”Our Enhanced Firetec cable is an ideal choice for fire alarm systems where a softskin solution has been deemed appropriate for the installation. “We are the only cable producer to offer the full range of fire performance cables. Our customers buy products and services from an informed position - we offer a comprehensive choice supported by technical advice from one source.” For further information about AEI Cables visit the website at www.aeicables.co.uk NOTES TO EDITORS
