Choose fire alarm equipment carefully

Building operators and other users of life safety systems need specialist advice in choosing the most appropriate fire alarm control equipment, although often they are failing to get the level of information and support required to help them to make fully informed buying decisions. These were among the main findings of a survey of fire safety systems integrators, installers, designers and maintenance providers undertaken on behalf of Morley-IAS at a recent industry seminar.

Support for campaign on rogue traders

The NICEIC has welcomed the Consumer White Paper recently published by the Government in which it outlines its commitment to work with enforcement authorities, business and scheme operators to help raise awareness of schemes designed to safeguard the consumer. The Paper also outlines new powers for the courts to ban persistent rogue traders, a national specialist team for internet enforcement to tackle scams which con consumers on the internet, a central 'Fighting Fund' to tackle rogue traders operating on a large scale and a pilot scheme giving Trading Standards officers powers to help consumers get money back.

Young apprentices are receiving the benefit of working at AEI Cables as part of a two-year course of study. The Young Apprenticeship Programme is aimed at capable and motivated pupils, who enjoy engineering and design in school and are considering a career in manufacturing. The programme is also designed to help employers who have in the past experienced difficulty with recruitment of suitable engineering staff, particularly at middle and senior management levels. Counterfeit issue ‘being lost’

Kevin Harris, chairman of the BEAMA anti-counterfeiting Working Group, speaking at a recent conference in Brussels, said that the battle against counterfeits was being lost because politicians and regulators were only paying lip service to the issue rather than deploying the necessary resources to deal with the problem. An estimated £30 million worth of counterfeit electrical products reaches the UK annually.

Building standards clarified

The Government has set out plans to make it easier for builders to understand what standards are expected of them and to ensure buildings comply with high standards of safety and sustainability. The measures were set out in the Future of Building Control Implementation Plan. The measures also cut red tape and support builders through the recession by giving councils greater freedom to let responsible builders get on with the job and to focus instead on builders with a history of shoddy work.

Prison chooses Mineral Insulated Cabling

A major new prison refurbishment at Swansea in south Wales is installing AEI’s Mineral Insulated Cabling (MIC) because of its ultimate fire protection features (pictured). The MIC is being installed in the systems powering the warden call function, the locking devices and the fire detection and alarm systems. MIC is an enhanced cable which will ensure continuity of power even in a fire because it will not burn and can withstand temperatures of more than 1,000°C, enabling maximum time for escape in the event of fire. Legal ruling on WEEE

The High Court has ruled that the UK’s Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) regulations governing the collection, treatment and recycling of electrical and electronic equipment are lawful and entirely consistent with the EU Directive. A company claimed that the continued failure of the Environment Agency to take enforcement action against schemes which are deliberately and significantly overcollecting WEEE is unlawful.
